International Dark Sky Week Edition

From the Naramata Slow Community Group

This week, we look up with even greater purpose. It's International Dark Sky Week—a global celebration of the night, led by Dark Sky International, and perfectly timed to include Earth Day.  We believe that preserving our night skies is not only about beauty—it’s about biodiversity, well-being, and a deeper connection to the rhythms of nature. Light pollution affects everything from migrating birds to pollinating insects, and even our sleep.

This year, Dark Sky International is highlighting the link between dark skies and a healthy Earth. Their message is clear: less light, more life. Throughout the week, they’re sharing ways we can reduce light pollution in our homes, neighbourhoods, and public spaces—simple actions that make a real difference.

Here in Naramata, we’re proud to be in the final stretch toward certification as an International Dark Sky Community. Our lighting guidelines are ready. Our commitment is strong. All we need now is the support of the RDOS to bring our Dark Sky Bylaws to life.

Take the 2025 Dark Sky Pledge
Join thousands around the world in making a commitment to protect the night by taking the 2025 Dark Sky Pledge. It’s a simple yet powerful way to show your support for dark skies and sustainable lighting practices in your community.  Make your pledge here: darksky.org/pledge

Other ways you can celebrate this week:

  • Turn off unnecessary outdoor lights at night

  • Use warm-colored, fully shielded lighting where needed

  • Take a moment to stargaze and share the magic with someone you love

  • Follow @darkskyinternational for tips and stories all week long

Together, let’s keep Naramata’s skies dark and our future bright.
